Have you ever heard of red raspberry leaf tea? I hadn’t, until I read about it in The Mama Natural Week-by-Week Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth by Genevieve Howland.
Rumor has it that red raspberry leaf tea conditions your uterus for a fast and painless labor and delivery.
Is that true? Well, you know what? I drank lots of it during two recent pregnancies and it worked for me!
What IS Red Raspberry Leaf, Anyway?
Red raspberry is a plant native to parts of Europe and Asia. It’s known mainly for its delicious and savory berries, but its leaves also offer a wealth of nutritional benefits.
Red raspberry leaf (which tastes nothing like raspberries, by the way) is widely used in women’s herbal tea blends due to the way it can relieve symptoms of PMS. It’s also a common ingredient in women’s fertility tea blends (such as this one from Wholesome Story and this one from Pink Stork).
When taken during pregnancy, red raspberry leaf tea is said to strengthen and tone the uterus. It can also improve the efficiency of your uterus to support a faster and less painful labor and delivery.
Drinking This Tea During Pregnancy: What Does the Science Say?
The effects of red raspberry leaf tea on childbirth have been explored in several medical studies. You can also find lots of anecdotal stories from women who drank it during pregnancy and had short, painless labors like my own.
Here’s some of what I found online.
The Australian College of Midwives Incorporated Journal says that when consumed during pregnancy, red raspberry leaf tea can shorten labor without producing side effects. It also reduces the likelihood of having a Cesarean section or drug-induced labor.
Another study in the Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health says consuming red raspberry leaf in tablet form can shorten the second stage of labor and reduce the rate of forceps deliveries.
What Red Raspberry Leaf Tea Did For My Labor & Delivery
I have three kids. My first one was a traditional hospital birth. I was given several drugs for it, including pitocin, epidural, and morphine. I barely remember that birth because I was all drugged up. I was 27 years old.
I had the other kids in my early 40s. I’m not a drug user and I’m not into Big Pharma products, so I hired midwives and went for the 100% natural childbirth experience.
For those two pregnancies, I drank strong batches of red raspberry leaf tea from week 38 until the days my babies were born.
First, I bought a giant 2-pound bag of loose red raspberry leaf tea by Micro Ingredients. I put 1/2 cup of tea in several large mason jars and allowed the tea to steep for at least one hour. Then, I drank about 2 to 3 cups a day.
When I finally did go into labor, it all happened surprisingly fast—both times.
With the first one, my water broke and contractions began 15 minutes later. That baby was born two hours later. She came so fast my husband had to deliver the baby himself while our midwife was on speakerphone. Labor itself was a bit painful, but delivery wasn’t. After it was all over, it realized it was highly similar to an intense workout.
My experience with raspberry leaf the second time went very much the same way. Except labor and delivery lasted three hours with that one.
Can Men Drink Red Raspberry Leaf Tea?
Red raspberry leaf tea is often touted as “women’s tea,” but men can drink it, too!
It’s packed with antioxidants that can ward off inflammation, and is high in nutrients including iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and vitamin C, among many others. Red raspberry leaf may also improve hormone regulation and prostate health in men.
Red Raspberry Leaf as a Hangover Cure?
I have another fun anecdote to share about this tea. My husband and I found that drinking a strong cup of red raspberry leaf can help you sober up more quickly after having a few drinks. It can also reduce hangover symptoms the next day. We’ve used it for this purpose before, and we both swear it works.
A LOT of evidence supports the health benefits of red raspberry leaf tea for women and men. But PLEASE consult with your healthcare provider before drinking it, especially if you’re pregnant! I can’t stress that enough. Delivering a baby without a doctor or midwife was a bit scary and I wouldn’t do it again, but at least I have another amazing story to share with people!
In Conclusion
Everything went well with both pregnancies. If this is something you want to try, I’d like to strongly suggest and reiterate the importance of consulting with your provider first.
Of course, I can’t conclusively say that red raspberry leaf tea was the reason I experienced short, speedy, painless labors. I also exercise and eat clean. However, I know my body really well, and I truly believe this tea made it happen.
Would this anecdote be passed down over centuries if there weren’t some truth and validity behind it?
