Analog Wellness—Apparently, Going Outside Is a New Health Trend

Analog wellness—have you heard about this? It’s a new, growing health trend.

It’s about doing activities that don’t involve smartphones—like going outside, reading physical books, and having conversations with real people, face to face.

In other words, analog wellness is basically life before smartphones. It’s living in 1985 or in 1995. It’s life during any of those years, when times were more…analog.

As someone who was born in 1980 and grew up before smartphones existed, I have two main thoughts about this:

  • This isn’t exactly a “trend.” It’s just normal life.
  • Apparently, digital use has become extreme to the point ordinary human behavior has to be rebranded and touted as a trend.

So what’s this trend really all about?

Nearly everyone understands the importance of taking a shower following a workout. A post-workout shower aids in recovery, reduces muscle soreness, and washes sweat and bacteria from your skin to prevent infections and breakouts. But did you know that taking a shower BEFORE your workout also comes with benefits?

You may be thinking, why would I shower before my workout if I’m going to get sweaty anyway? Isn’t showering before my workout pointless and a waste of time?

Playing Frisbee is one of my favorite leisure activities. It’s fun and always manages to put me in a great mood.

I play with my family at least once a week, at the park or in our backyard. When we were beginners, our games were relatively mellow and we’d lazily toss the Frisbee back and forth between the 20 feet or so that separated us. Today, we play on giant baseball fields so we have enough room to run for and catch our “extreme” Frisbee tosses.

We play with two different regulation Frisbees: this Discraft Ultrastar frisbee for daytime play and this Sportneer LED frisbee that lights up for nighttime play.

Now that the weather is cooler, I’m seeing a lot more runners at my favorite local park. This is super exciting for me! But while I’m stoked to be sharing the path with other runners, I can’t help but cringe inwardly when I see some people’s running forms.

Some clench water bottles or smartphones in their fists while they run, while others look as if they took running lessons from the dancing kids in A Charlie Brown Christmas. While part of me wants to giggle, the other part of me truly feels emphatic—mainly because they’re putting themselves at risk for injury, and not getting as much out of their workouts as they could.

In Las Vegas, daily temperatures in the summer usually average between 100 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit. While milder summer temperatures in other parts of the U.S. are pleasant enough to lure people outdoors, most runners who live in desert climates head to their gyms for treadmill runs, or change their routines altogether just to beat the heat.

While I enjoy having the running path all to myself during the summer, I miss the camaraderie I could be sharing with other runners brave enough to withstand the heat. I wonder: would more runners stay outside if they truly understood the benefits of exercising in temperatures over 100 degrees? Would more runners stay outdoors if they knew how to properly care for themselves in hot temperatures?
