Cottage cheese is one of my favorite foods because it’s loaded with nutrients like calcium, casein protein, and essential B vitamins, and makes for a quick and healthy snack to eat on the go. But some of the healthiest brands of plain cottage cheese are sorely lacking in flavor, or have an unusual, unappealing taste.
The brand of cottage cheese I buy only has three ingredients: cultured skim milk, cream, and salt. If I plan on enjoying my cottage cheese, I’ll usually have to add an extra ingredient or two to boost its flavor and make it taste better. Many other cottage cheese brands — especially the flavored cottage cheese brands — are loaded with sugar, corn starch, “natural flavor,” and other toxic ingredients that cause oxidative stress, and that can lead to weakened immunity, inflammation, and cancer.Read More »
Don’t let the “cheese” in cottage cheese deter you from this healthy superfood! If your goal is to lose weight, build muscle, and improve your metabolism, it’s time to stock your refrigerator with cottage cheese.
Cottage cheese offers an array of health benefits: it’s packed with nutrients, convenient to eat, and keeps you feeling full for long periods of time thanks to its high protein content. Even if you’re not trying to lose weight or build muscle, cottage cheese lends to a stronger immune system and improved overall bodily function.Read More »
The microwave was my mom’s favorite go-to appliance when we were growing up. She microwaved canned vegetables to complement steak or chicken, or heated up frozen burritos on the fly if we needed to be somewhere.
Leftovers were stored in plastic storage containers and heated up in the microwave for lunch and dinner. We even used the microwave to heat up candy bars stored in the freezer. My brother and I were always getting sick; if only we knew then what we knew today about the health hazards associated with microwave use.Read More »
It never ceases to amaze me how certain foods, plants, and common household items can resolve certain health problems in a pinch. Got heartburn? No worries, just drink one or two caps of apple cider vinegar and your heartburn will resolve itself in minutes. Have an eye infection? Just dabble a few drops of pure, organic honey into your eyes to naturally rinse away bacteria. Suffering from a sunburn or minor chemical burn? Apply yogurt to your face!
A neighbor of mine has been working with chemical solutions for an art project. He always wears proper protective gear (eye goggles, thick layers of clothing, apron, bandana), but yesterday, suffered a minor burn on the skin of his neck after leaning over a pot of steam generated by the chemical solution he was working with. The burns were relatively minor and didn’t affect him until this morning, when he described experiencing unrelenting itching on his neck. A bit of redness and inflammation was also present.Read More »
After my workout today I went to my favorite local Korean restaurant for a seafood tofu soup bowl loaded with shrimp, clams, and mussels. This charming Asian eatery serves its tofu bowls with fresh kimchi and rice on the side. When the soup comes, you put a small amount of rice on your spoon, then dip it into the soup.
The food at this restaurant is always incredibly fresh, high in quality, and absolutely delicious! Another reason I continue eating here is the fact this restaurant serves clean rice. What is clean rice, you ask?
Clean rice is rice that has been rinsed thoroughly before cooking. If you eat a lot of rice, you can eventually tell when rice has been cleaned, and when it hasn’t. I won’t tattle and name-drop here, but I’ve eaten at plenty of restaurants that serve dirty rice, and I’m never eating at those places again!Read More »
